This is a new Fenway oil I just finished. It is more a Kenmore Square motif than a strict ballpark picture. But I am really feeling like the neighborhood around the park is becoming an extension of it.

I really like a lot of the ownership and neighborhood business’s additions.

This new painting is being exhibited and made available at Trees Place, Orleans Ma. And it’s not much of a stretch to admit I have done more Fenway Park paintings than anyone else ever. It’s been a great changing motif for me since my first Lansdowne Street attempt in 1986.

I am having an opening at Trees Place this Labor Day weekend and this painting among other new urban paintings will be available.

This “Boston Skyline, Kenmore Square” oil is 36×48″ o/c. It’s so fresh it is still wet.

June 1,2008

So I have been asked to do an underwater mural for the Mid Cape Racquet Club on Cape Cod. The owner wanted an underwater theme.

So I did some studies and got the color scheme together first. Priming the wall to be painted with my base paint color.

Then adjusting that color lighter, I painted another layer at the top to create depth and a sense of sky above.

Adding broken color as the paint shifts down to create the sense of water.

Letting that dry over the weekend I came back ready to start painting. The work space is just a hall walking into a busy ladies locker room. So there is not a lot of time and space to get back from the painting. Plus I have women coming through with gym bags. So I tried to paint it in my head before beginning the work.

Getting on location at the club to paint today it came together quickly, basically because I had been painting

it in my head for two months

So while I was laying this in a couple of high school girls told me it was cool, and one told me when they had seen the mural of my sunrise upstairs in the cardio room, she wanted to paint that in her bedroom at home. That’s the kind of complement I like to receive.

This is a busy weekend.

This afternoon I have an opening to go to for my students at the Cape Cod Conservatory. What I a fun class I had earlier this spring and they produced great paintings despite themselves.

As soon as I got them away from the beach dune concept they really started growing as painters. I learned a lot as a teacher and grew as well. After taking a long hiatus from teaching, it was refreshing to begin again.

We started each class with a short talk about the work ahead and a demonstration by me to get everyone going and ended each class with a group critique, lining all the paintings up together.

Part of what I cover in my classes is how to frame a painting properly, what to look for. And how to sign a painting, and just getting the work ready to show. So this opening is all part of their learning process.

Then tomorrow I will show for the first time several paintings that are just finished at the First Annual Food and Wine Festival in Hyannis. I think this will be fun to get direct feedback on the new pieces heading to Trees Place next week and to meet and greet with potential customers. Plus I just can’t stand great food and fine wine. It’s really going to be a stretch for me.

This morning I am framing up a painting of Menemsha that has been finished in the studio for a few years now. It’s just one of those paintings that I have never shown before. Last week my framer had an extra frame that just fit this piece and it made it complete. So finally I am showing the Menemsha, Martha’s Vineyard painting that was started on location years ago.

It just needed the right frame.
